Fifth entry in the storied adventure game series coming with the help of crowdfunding

Revolution takes Broken Sword 5 to Kickstarter

Revolution Software has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund development of a new Broken Sword title.

Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse will be the fifth title in the storied series, reuniting George Stobbart and Nico Collard.

The developer is looking for $400,000, which is it says will give it “full creative freedom” and the chance to reward donors. At the time of writing, the campaign has received $40,076 from 853 backers.

“The process of game development has previously been remote from our fans,” said Charles Cecil, managing director of Revolution Software.

“By self-publishing, we now have a direct relationship with our audience – a position that we value enormously. We’re delighted that the latest Broken Sword title is to be the first of our adventures that we can take with our fans. By pledging support now, we’ll be going on a journey which will end when the opening credits roll – it’s going to be excellent.”

“Crucially, Kickstarter support will enable us to create – for the very first time – an adventure game with total creative freedom.”

The game is expect to arrive on PC, Mac, iOS and Android in early 2013.

For $15, a digital copy of the game will be made available on release, along with bonus material. Revolution is also offering additional rewards, such as artwork, signed game design documents and merchandise, for higher tier donors.

Revolution has produced a teaser video to whet the appetite of fans and give newcomers a look at what the series is known for:

Broken Sword’s previous editions were praised for their attention to detail and level of engagement, which earned the studio numerous awards, including a Development Legend Award for Cecil.

Revolution is one of the oldest studios to join the Kickstarter funding drive, which has seen an influx of gaming campaigns this year.
