Industry given good bill of health as earnings rise by 6.5%

The average worldwide income for a game developer has risen to an annual £34,457 ($53,500), according to new data revealed in Develop’s biggest ever salary survey.

Nearly 1,000 games industry professionals took part in Develop’s latest study, with more than half working in core development jobs.

On average, salaries climbed by more than £2,000 ($3,100) for core development roles such as coding and art.

Last year the average salary was put at £32,203 ($50,794) – showing no significant growth from 2010 figures. But in 2011 the average dev income rose by about 6.5 per cent – far higher than current inflation rate calculations from the Consumer Price Index (4.2%).

Had Develop included the salary results from studio bosses, CEOs and creative directors - many of which also took part in the study - the average would have soared to £37,407.
