Develop has been judging the entrees at this weekend’s Dare ProtoPlay event, where 15 young development teams from across the globe made public the results of their newly completed projects.
The teams, who each had just ten weeks to turn a concept into a completed game, were competing for selection as one of three sole nominees of the BAFTA Ones To Watch Award at the forthcoming British Academy Video Game Awards in 2011.
Develop was joined by judges from the likes of Ubisoft, Rockstar, Codemasters, Realtime Worlds, the BBC and Denki, who all ranked the entrees for the competition, which is conceived as a showcase for the Abertay University organised Dare to be Digital game design contest.
Title’s including Angry Mango’s Mush, Bazooka Duck’s Epoch Defense, Bears With Jetpack’s Grrr! and Grimnir Games’ Death Inc all vied for the judges’ attention on platforms as diverse as PC, Zune and PSP, with a number of titles demonstrating considerable and encouraging technical and artistic ability.
Hosted in Edinburgh during the city’s infamous festival, Dare ProtoPlay also featured a number of workshops, panels for aspiring developers, and a showcase of the Scottish Game Jam 48 hour dev competition entrees.
The ongoing Dare ProtoTeach event is also taking place, and is themed around encouraging excellence in UK game development education. ProtoPlay attendees joined targeted seminars and pedagogical workshops and panels designed to draw attention to innovative practice.
