The Raspberry Pi Foundation has doubled the RAM for its self-titled microcomputer while freezing its cost price.
One of the most common requests to the makers of the microcomputer, has been to increase the device’s RAM – 256MB in the original unit – to allow it to function as a general-purpose computer, running multiple large applications concurrently and opening up greater programming uses for it.
From today, all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB RAM as standard.
CPC, the consumer arm of Premier Farnell, the primary supplier and manufacturer of Raspberry Pi computers in the UK, will sell the new 512MB board for £29.95 – freezing at the cost price set for the original 256MB version.
Furthermore, CPC has promised customers all in-stock orders placed before 7pm will be dispatched the same day and no delivery will be charged. With thousands of units in stock, CPC says it has enough Raspberry Pis to cope with demand until January 2013.
Farnell was the first company to announce it would be manufacturing and selling Raspberry Pi in the UK.
