Optimisation tool allowed Heavy Rain developer to use Sony’s hardware more effectively

Quantic Dream chose 3D optimisation middleware Simplygon for its latest PS3 release, Beyond: Two Souls.

The psychological action thriller takes players on a journey across the globe as they play out the remarkable life of Jodie Holmes, played by Ellen Page.

Created by Donya Labs, provider of automatic 3D optimisation tools for games and digital content, Simplygon aims to help developers save important resources where artists would otherwise need to manually re-create large amounts of content.

It works by automatically generating lower-polygon models that are required for different levels of detail at higher frame-rates, and requiring less data.

“Beyond: Two Souls is a title that brings players deep into our living universe, with deeply emotional gameplay elements that require the technology to do things it has never done before,” said Guillaume de Fondaumiere, co-CEO and executive producer of Quantic Dream.

“Simplygon allows us to optimise what we’re showing the player, while freeing up processing power to display the smallest details that further engage our players.”

Martin Ekdal, VP of sales and marketing at Donya Labs, add: “Quantic Dream has a track record of creating games that are both groundbreaking technologically and bleeding edge when it comes to game design and story depth. Simplygon has helped Quantic Dream to develop a game that again pushes the limits of what can be done in games today.”

Develop recently spoke to Donya Labs about Simplygon 5 and what its offers developers.
