Sony’s latest home console has exceeded over 5.3m units

PS4 surpasses 5m units sold worldwide

PlayStation 4 has sold over five million units worldwide as of February 8th, Sony has revealed.

The console broke sales records when its launched in the US the Europe last November, and its continued momentum is seeing its already approach the lifetime sales of Nintendo’s Wii U, which stand at 5.86m units as of January 29th.

Sony announced that its new home console had passed the four million mark in January, eager to show its consumer clout against rival Microsoft, which has sold a reported 3.9 million units of its Xbox One.

PlayStation 4 has now exceeded 5.3 million sales, and is yet to launch in it’s home nation Japan. The console is due to go on sale there on February 22nd.

PlayStation 4 reportedly sold almost double the number of Xbox One console in the US last month, but Microsoft’s latest console is still selling at a faster rate than its predecessor, Xbox 360.

Sony’s overall business posted another loss in the third finance quarter of 2013, but PS4’s sell-out launch managed to claw back some much needed revenue for the Japanese firm.
