With all three new consoles on shelves, the next generation can begin in earnest

PlayStation 4 arrives in the UK and Europe

The beginning of the new generation of console gaming culminated last night with the arrival of PlayStation 4 in the UK and Europe.

Sony marked the occasion with numerous events around the country, including an official launch party and midnight opening near London’s Covent Garden, with more midnight openings at leading retailers such as GAME.

The new PlayStation has already been available for a fortnight in the US, where it sold one million units in just 24 hours. Of course, its Microsoft rival – the Xbox One – also accomplished this

Xbox One also sold 150,000 units in the UK after two days on sale, reportedly trumping the Wii U’s first year sales in the same region. Sony will no doubt be announcing within the next few days whether or not the PS4 has enjoyed the same success.

With Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U all available now, attention will shift towards the games – and particularly how developers harness the power of these consoles to deliver new experiences – as a way of gauging where the next generation will lead us.
