Playdom fast expands with double buyout

Leading social game firm Playdom is fast expanding its operations after acquiring two rivals in the sector; Trippert Labs and Green Patch.

The move comes after Playdom struck a VC investment deal worth $43 million, as well as open a new 10,000-square-foot facility in San Francisco and new studio game studio in the US State of Oregon.

The new buyouts typify a strong year for Playdom, which in June saw former EA and Microsoft exec John Pleasants join the growing company as CEO.

Pleasants himself remained focused on the future of the company, stating it will expand further still.

“Playdom has aggressive plans to expand our social gaming footprint in 2010,” he said.

“With these acquisitions, we are increasing our cross-promotional power and bringing two talented new game studios into the Playdom family.

Trippert Labs and Green Patch are both well versed in the digital and social game business.

Social game developer Green Patch is responsible for the popular Facebook title Farm Life, a game that is said will bolster Playdom’s monthly user base on Facebook by more than 30 per cent.

Trippert Labs, meanwhile, is an iPhone specialist studio that’s already seen several of its titles reach top spot on the free game charts on the App Store. Trippert will expand Playdom’s development capacity by at least 25 per cent, the group hopes.

“The addition of Green Patch and Trippert Labs will significantly enhance our development throughput and help fuel Playdom’s game pipeline,” added Pleasants.
