Software additions and launch of Platform SDK coincide with release of consumer model of VR headset

Oculus Rift update adds Asynchronous Timewarp, Unity and Unreal support

Oculus has updated its PC SDK and launched the Platform SDK as the first consumer version of its Rift virtual reality hardware hit shelves.

Version 1.3 of the Oculus PC SDK adds support for the consumer Rift, as well as several technical improvements.

These include support for tracking app lifecycle, and native compatibility with game engines Unreal and Unity.

In addition, the new SDK also introduces Asynchronous Timewarp, a feature announced at this year’s GDC, which aims to reduce latency and ‘judder’ in devs’ games to minimise the risk of players feeling uncomfortable while using the Rift.

Devs wanting to launch their game on the consumer Rift need to use the 1.3 SDK, and agree to an updated set of T&Cs issued by Oculus.

The VR firm has also launched the first release of its Oculus Platform, which will serve as the software foundation to its VR titles and storefront.

1.0 of the SDK allows devs to build in features such as leaderboards, multiplayer match-making and peer-to-peer networking.

Oculus’ previous Development Kits (DK1 and DK2) for the Rift aren’t designed to be operated as consumer devices, but can continue to be used with the 1.3 Rift SDK by studios wanting to develop in VR.
