Crystal Dynamics hands over the reigns to experienced Dutch studio for last-gen version

Nixxes Software handling Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox 360

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be developed by Netherlands-based Nixxes Software on Xbox 360.

The Xbox One edition is, of course, currently in the works at Crystal Dynamics but the latest issue of Game Informer – as spotted by GameSpot – says Nixxes is handling the last-gen version.

In the Game Informer interview, Square Enix exec Darrell Gallagher said the publisher is treating Rise of the Tomb Raider as "an Xbox One title without limitation, without even thinking of the Xbox 360 version". However, a demo from Nixxes convinced the firm to bring Lara Croft’s next adventures to the older Microsoft console.

"The Xbox 360’s ecosystem is still super strong," Gallagher said. "There are millions of players out there who have an Xbox 360 and those console translations take time. So we did a test.

"Nixxes put together a tech demo of Rise of the Tomb Raider content running on Xbox 360 and we were totally blown away by what they achieved. But the existence of that game isn’t limiting our work on the Xbox one version."

Nixxes has previously developed ports of previous Tomb Raider titles, including Legend, Anniversary, Underworld and the Definitive Edition of the 2013 reboot.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is being published by Microsoft as part of an exclusive deal with Square Enix, a move that has proven to be controversial among fans.
