Steam giant keeps quiet on staff exits

Valve is not cancelling any projects in the wake of a spate of staff departures, studio MD Gabe Newell has said.

Yesterday Develop revealed that Valve’s director of business Jason Holtman had left the company, after hardware engineer Jeri Ellsworth also revealed she had been fired on Twitter.

It has also been reported that as many as 25 employees have been let go, but Valve has yet to confirm this.

In a statement to Engadget, Newell clarified some speculation by claiming that Valve was not cancelling any projects or changing any of its priorities, and said the departures were unrelated to Steam, Linux or hardware.

He added however he would not discuss the reasons for letting staff go.

"We don't usually talk about personnel matters for a number of reasons. There seems to be an unusual amount of speculation about some recent changes here, so I thought I'd take the unusual step of addressing them,” said Newell.

“No, we aren't cancelling any projects. No, we aren't changing any priorities or projects we've been discussing. No, this isn't about Steam or Linux or hardware or [insert game name here]. We're not going to discuss why anyone in particular is or isn't working here."
