SIGGRAPH 07: New versions with aim to enhance game development pipelines

Softimage has unveiled the latest versions of its 3D animation software at SIGGRAPH today, promising new features and game production pipeline improvements from XSI and Face Robot.

XSI hits version 6.5, with its Essentials and Advanced software delivering a number of enhancements devised for studios like Lionhead, Valve, EA, Pandemic and NCsoft.

Targeted specifically for game development, the enhancements are designed to improve efficiency and include HDR rendermap support, additional SDK APIs, UV Editing enhancements and
enhanced audio support.

XSI Essentials now includes hair and fur, plus syflex cloth capabilities, while the Advanced version gets a drop in price.

Softimage also said that since opening its XSI API the number of third-party integratable products is on the rise, with more to be announced at SIGGRAPH.

Meanwhile, character facial animation tool Face Robot hits version 1.8 with its improvements focused on game development pipeline efficiencies. New features include Crosswalk, Motor, delta referencing and Animation Layers - all of which are built on the XSI 6 core. Plus, a new shape rig export system, improved game export pipeline, and enhanced training materials have all been added to the mix as well.

“Since our founding by Daniel Langlois, twenty years ago, Softimage has always prided itself on helping 3D artists unleash their creativity and to make the impossible come to life,” said Marc Stevens, vice president and general manager for Softimage.

“Once again, we have been listening to our customers and prospects and we followed their advice when we made these improvements to our features, packaging and pricing. We believe that the changes we are making will set a new standard for value and productivity in the industry.”
