Blitz Games Studios' Andrew Oliver alludes to possible E3 announcement

Microsoft will announce its 3D plan ‘soon’

Blitz Game Studios co-founder Andrew Oliver says that Microsoft is readying an announcement relating to 3D display on the Xbox 360

"3D does take a bit of extra work," suggested Oliver, speaking at today’s Westminster eForum event in London.

"Microsoft are going to be making an announcement about it at some point soon."

While Oliver did not specify a time frame, with E3 looming, could it be that Microsoft will unveil news of new 3D features next week?

Develop has now launched its E3 news page ahead of the pivotal event, offering industry-leading trade coverage all in one place. All web stories relating to E3 will be condensed into our news page here.

With Sony confirming 3D display games specifically for Move, it is conceivable that Microsoft could be ready to retort with a similar tech for Natal.

Elsewhere at the eForum event, Oliver also championed the entire Sony company as a driving force for 3D, pointing to the fact that along with the PS3’s capacity to support 3D gaming, Sony owns the blu-ray format that has been selected as the industry standard for 3D film releases, and is a significant protagonist of the development of 3D screens and tech.

"There’s lots of games coming on the PlayStation 3 very shortly in 3D. There’s a big show on next week," said Oliver.

"On the Xbox it [3D] has been rather quiet," he added.

"Our game did come out in 3D on the Xbox 360, so 3D is possible, even through an HDMI 1.2 cable. Ubisoft created Avatar, which includes a mode for 3D on a 3D TV. It is just a case of adding a mode into the options menu, so there’s no need for two different products."

The Westminster eForum event, titled ‘2020 Vision – web enabled television, 3D and future TV tech’, brought together opinion formers from across the game, consumer goods and broadcast industries to discuss the convergence and emergence of trends and technologies in the sector.
