The UK’s digital inclusion champion Martha Lane Fox has been appointed as the new chair of London studio MakieLab.

A leading figure for the UK government for digital literacy, Lane Fox will lend her considerable experience on the web to future of the 3D toy printing outfit.

Fox has founded numerous companies such as travel and leisure retailer Lastminute.com and karaoke brand LuckyVoice, and also sits on the boards of Marks & Spencer and Mydeco.com

“Having Martha as our chair is an amazing privilege, and a complete delight,” said MakieLab CEO Alice Taylor.

“We’re inspired by her commitment to all things internet, her incredible marketing expertise, and her passion for new frontiers. She’ll keep us pushing at boundaries and her expertise will be invaluable as we grow and diversify.”

Lane Fox added: “It’s rare to find a start-up that combines the disruption of a whole industry, a fabulous consumer facing product and an extremely strong team, but MakieLab does all three.

“I’m absolutely delighted that they wanted me as their Chair - even if it means my house is now full of 3D printed toys.”

As well as the appointment of Martha Lane Fox as chair, former Moshi Monsters platform team lead at Mind Candy Ben Burry has been hired as senior developer.

Former NCsoft head of community Jen Bolton has also joined the firm as communications director, and will join the company in October.

Bolton has previously held PR accounts on NHN Corporation and Riot Games, as well as providing consultancy for a number of indie and triple-A developers and publishers.
