Low budgets make creativity easier, says Honeyslug

£35 art budget helped London-based PSP Minis developer charm customers

Speaking to Develop as part of our ongoing focus on London studios, PSP Minis developer Honeyslug has highlighted the merits of working on an incredibly tight budget.

“We’ve found that it’s actually no harder to charm someone with a game, make them laugh even, on a shoestring budget," said Honeyslug's producer and PR man Mark Inman. "In fact, it’s possibly easier, because the limitations seem to make us more creative. This was definitely the case with Kahoots, where we had an art budget of £35, and bought all kinds of stuff from Kentish Town high street to scan or photograph, made characters from plasticine and wool, and drew the interface with felt tips.”

The studio also highlighted the benefits of establishing a base in the UK's capital if reliant on the work of freelancers, as is the case with Honeyslug.

“Much of the UK games industry is within an hour of the capital these days, which makes it easy for people to visit us for a chat," stated Inman.
