Japan developer also forms partnership with Gree to bring series to mobile

Konami unveils open-world Metal Gear Solid

Konami is developing an open-world version of its long-standing stealth-em up series Metal Gear Solid.

Revealing the news during a special 25th Anniversary event for the franchise, studio VP Hideo Kojima said the game, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, would run on the developer’s next-gen Fox Engine.

The cross-platform engine has been in production since 2008, suggesting the title could be release on multiple consoles, rather than just on PlayStation.

It is not known whether the title will be on current or next-gen consoles, and no release date was given.

As well as unveiling the latest entry into the series, a new Smartphone game being developed at Gree with Unity called Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops was also announced.

Kojima also confirmed it was working on a Metal Gear Solid movie.

The film is to be produced by The Amazing Spider-Man and Pac-Man: The Adventure Begins producer Avi Arad with Columbia Pictures.
