Flower and Journey composer Austin Wintory is also on board for its first project

Journey art director Matt Nava forms Giant Squid

Journey art director Matt Nava has formed a new studio, Giant Squid.

Nava, who was formerly at Thatgamecompany and led the art for both Journey and Flower, has partnered with television production house Ink Factory to form his new studio, which is based in Santa Monica.

The studio has begun work on its first project, which will include music from Austin Wintory, who also composed the score to Journey and Flower. Nicholas Clark, a designer and engineer also from Thatgamecompany, will be contributing in a senior advisory position.

Nava’s work on Flower helped earn the game a BAFTA in 2010 for Artistic Achievement; and this week Journey is up for eight BAFTA awards, including Artistic Achievement, Game Design and Best Game.

Giant Squid intends to “create artistic games that deliver beautiful, meaningful, and timeless experiences to a wide range of people”.

The studio is now hiring for positions, including a studio manager and engineers. See Giant Squid’s website for more.
