Indie god game Maia makes more than $1m

Developer plans to open new company Machine Studios; Considering work on new project

Crowdfunded Steam Early Access god game Maia has made more than $1m for indie developer Simon Roth.

Speaking to Develop, Roth said the money includes the £140,000 raised through Kickstarter in November 2012, the $11,000 funding from Indiegogo, direct sales from his website and purchases of the Steam Early Access release.

The developer is now in the process of setting up a new company in Oxford called Machine Studios.

Roth said the new name would be better for employees, as they would not have to put “worked at Simon Roth” on their CVs.

“The real reason I wanted Machine Studios rather than Simon Roth Incorporated is I thought it would be really narcissistic and weird, for one,” he said.

“And also, I didn’t want my employees to have to put on their CV ‘I worked at Simon Roth’, when it could be Machine Studios. And so it gives them a better thing to say what they worked for.”

As well as continuing with development of Maia, Roth said he is considering working on another project once he has brought in new staff, which could be one of three original projects or a licensed IP.
