Industry veteran exits Doom developer to focus on his role as Oculus CTO

John Carmack has officially left id Software after 22 years at the company.

Earlier this year, Carmack was appointed chief technology officer at virtual reality tech start-up Oculus. The industry veteran is working from the firm's newly opened Dallas office.

Despite his new role at Oculus, at the time id Software said he had not left the company, and would "continue to provide leadership" at the studio.

Taking to Twitter however, Carmack confirmed he has now left id for good.

"I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out," he tweeted.

"Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging."

Studio director Tim Willits said Carmack's resignation would not affect the studio's current projects.

"John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," read a statement from id studio director Tim Willits.

"John's work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id's tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well."

Carmack was a co-founder of the famous Doom developer id Software in 1991, where has has worked for 22 years.
