Geomerics to bring gaming tech to Hollywood

Enlighten developer tasked with researching real-time graphics rendering techniques for the big screen

UK graphics firm Geomerics has secured backing from the Technology Strategy Board to bring its techniques and technology to the movie industry.

The team has been awarded £1m to research how the real-time graphics rendering found in games could be used to revolutionise film-making, saving cost and production time on complex animation sequences.

"Real-time computer graphics technology can now meet the quality demands of both film and television," said Geomerics director Chris Doran. 

"Providing our lighting technology to big screen filmmakers enables them to deliver movies with compelling visual experiences faster and for less money with the quality that movie-goers expect. This will be a dramatic shift in the industry's production practices."

Geomerics is perhaps best known for its Enlighten real-time lighting technology, seen in titles such as Battlefield 3 and 4, Need for Speed: Rivals and Eve Online. At GDC 2014, it was announced the tech would be built into the Unity 5 engine.
