GDC11: Microsoft XNA dev contest opens

Dream.Build.Play 2011 offering XBLA publishing contract

Microsoft has opened registration for the Dream.Build.Play 2011 Challenge, a development contest for indie devs making exclusive use of the XNA Game Studio tools.

Submissions for the contest will open from May 17th to June 14th. The grand prize winning entry will receive $40,000 (£25,000), while the first second and third place entries will take away $20,000 (£12,000), $10,000 (£6,000) and $5,000 (£3,000) respectively.

All winners will also get the chance to receive an Xbox LIVE Arcade publishing contract.

“Microsoft has always valued the creativity and innovative thinking that comes from independent developers,” said principal development manager at the Xbox Advanced Technology Group Mark Seminatore.

“We’ve hosted the Dream.Build.Play contest for the past five years in an effort to support and nurture that talent.”

Winning entries to previous contests have gone on to see varying levels of notable success, with titles like Beat Hazard, CarneyVale Showtime and Weapon of Choice becoming top sellers on XBL Indie Games.

Winning title from 2009, Dust: An Elysian Tail, received an XBLA contract.

“Each year we are amazed at the quality of games submitted to the Dream.Build.Play Challenge,” said principal program manager at the Xbox Advanced Technology Group Pete Isensee.

“I can’t wait to see what indie developers will create this year.”
