GDC: Triple-A push 'a cancerous growth'

'Devs should aim to educate, entertain and at least be artistic' says Assassin's Creed creative director

The push for enormous scale and cutting edge graphics in triple-A games is a ‘cancerous growth’ for the industry, says Assassin's Creed creative director.

As reported by Gamespot, Alex Hutchinson, speaking at his session ‘Designing Games to Sell’, said that if developers don’t push to entertain and take an artistic approach, they will simply be seen as dinosaurs of the industry.

"We think about this as a kind of cancerous growth," said Hutchinson.

"I think that will leave the triple-A blockbusters as nothing more than the last of the dinosaurs."

He added that as well as this potential future for high-end gaming, another “dystopian” vision would be where games only focused on analytics and making money.

"In my mind video games need to have the goal of educating people, entertaining people, or at least being artistic," he said.

"If you're not pushing any of these things, then I think we’re in for a rough patch."
