Free-to-play comes good for French mobile firm as sales rise to £195m
Mobile games firm Gameloft made £161m (€192.8m) in profit in 2013.
Gross profit for the company in 2013 was up 10 per cent. This profit was largely driven by its free-to-play business, which can be found across its titles, such as Modern Combat series and licensed games like The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The sale of virtual goods and advertising accounted for more than 85 per cent of the company’s smartphone revenue.
Gameloft put its large audience reach down to free-to-play. In the last 30 days, it claims 160 million people have played a Gameloft game on their smartphone or tablet.
The company also said the business model is increasing the longevity of its products, explaining that games launched prior to 2013 accounted for more than 75 per cent of the company’s revenues in 2013.
The French firm’s consolidated sales reached £195m (€233.3m) million, up by 12 per cent year on year. It’s games also managed to find audience on an almost even ratio in major markets, with Europe, Middle East and Africa representing 32 per cent of its sales, North America with 28 per cent, Latin America with 21 per cent and Asia-Pacific with 19 per cent.
Sales of its games on smartphones and tablets grew by 36 per cent year-on-year.
“The solid growth in sales, stable headcount and efficient cost control have allowed Gameloft to significantly increase its current operating income which stood at €28.4 million, up 39 per cent year-on-year,” said Gameloft CFO Alexandre de Rochefort.
