Japanese developer conference gets support from Namco Bandai, Epic, SCEE and more

More sessions have been added to the line-up for Japan's CEDEC developer conference.

SCEE R&D manager Jason Gordon Doig will be presenting 'PhyreEngine Terrain System', in which he'll discuss how to use the newly-added terrain system of SCEE's cross-platform (and Develop Award nominated) PhyreEngine, from the art pipeline on the PC to processing it on the SPUs.

In 'Audio Production for Metal Gear Solid 4', Konami sound producer Sotaro Toshima will discuss the gap between what the development team wanted to do with the audio in MGS4 and the reality of trying to realise that on a next-gen machine.

The more arty may be interested in 'Square Enix's Facial Animation Initiatives', helmed by motion designer James Williamson and Takuya Iwasaki, facial animator on the Last Remnant, which will give a demonstration of the facial animation workflow using both English and Japanese sample dialogue, as well as cover model topologies and skeletons.

Epic's Tim Sweeney will be on hand to discuss 'Future Game Development Technologies', promising to cover programming models for multi-cope CPUs, future hardware trends and lessons learnt from Unreal Engine 3 (including the difficulties faced when doing multithreaded programming in C++, the importance of empowering artists with visual tools and the vastly different hardware models around).

Finally, Miyuki Shibutani will present 'The creation and upbringing of our child, Mojipittan', which will talk about the development of Namco Bandai's popular Scrabble-a-like Mojipittan in terms of bringing up a child, covering how they 'grew' their child and what the Mojipittan Project, as the place where the 'child' would be brought up, was like as a home.

CEDEC 2008 takes place between September 9th and 11th at the Showa Women's University in Tokyo. For more information, visit the CEDEC website.
