The man behind the Final Fantasy series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, is working on something completely new.
Best known for his pivotal role in creating Square Enix’s long-running RPG franchise back in 1987, Sakaguchi departed the publisher in 2004 to form his own studio Mistwalker.
The last Final Fantasy game he worked on was 2003’s Final Fantasy X-2, as executive producer.
Mistwalker produced a number of console titles, including Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey for Xbox 360, and The Last Story for Wii, before moving onto mobile platforms in 2012.
The outlet’s latest effort was 2014’s Terra Battle for iOS and Android, which Sakaguchi assured Famitsu (via Siliconera) would continue to be expanded this year alongside the creation of a new game.
Nominating “new” as his defining word for 2016 in an image posted online, he remained coy about details of the upcoming project, saying only that the project will be “original” and aim to embody a “new worldview”.
A potential launch window, title, release platforms and genre are yet to be revealed.
