Exient has taken out a licence for Enlighten, the acclaimed dynamic lighting tool from ARM-owned middleware specialist Geomerics.
The UK studio, best known for Angry Birds Go and Angry Birds Transformers, is currently working on a new mobile title built with its own internal game engine. Exient is hoping that the global illumination enabled by Enlighten will help showcase the quality of this new tech.
“Enlighten’s real-time lighting workflow is a game changer. Baked lighting is a huge production bottleneck for any team; it’s very difficult to efficiently produce levels to the quality that players expect,” said lead technical artist Simon Benge.
“A single artist using Enlighten can work without any disruption to the art pipeline, and can react to lighting and level changes faster than a team of 100 using a baking technology – and even produce higher quality content.”
Exient’s as-yet-unannounced mobile title is due for release in the second half of 2016.
