CCP partners with Dark Horse Comics and filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur
Subscribers to CCP's space sandbox MMO EVE Online and ground-combat spinoff Dust 514 will get a chance to have their in-game exploits retold on television and in comic books.
Icelandic developer can pull this off thanks to partnerships with Dark Horse Comics and filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, best known for 2012 chart-topper "Contraband" and the 2013 academy-award shortlisted "The Deep".
The stories for the comic and show will be taken from those submitted by players to the “True Stories From the First Decade” website.
“The EVE universe is full of astounding stories of epic battles, daring heists, and gripping political intrigue, all of which will make for an amazing television series,” said Kormákur.
“The opportunity to interact with the fans of the EVE Universe directly opens up all sorts of exciting possibilities.”
CCP's CEO Hilmar Pétursson was unsurprisingly enthusastic about this celebration of the MMO's tenth aniversary.
“The inhabitants of the notorious and beloved EVE Universe have ten years’ worth of dramatic stories to tell,” said Pétursson.
“Our close collaboration with Baltasar and his creative team gives me confidence that we will capture EVE’s essence, inspiring millions of TV viewers with visions of humanity’s future.”
Dark Horse Comics will release EVE: TRUE STORIES, its contribution to the saga, digitally through the web and its mobile app before printing the full run of short stories as a graphic novel.
In addition, Dark Horse is releasing a 184-page, full-color hardcover and digital edition sourcebook for the game, dubbed EVE: Source, that provides customers with an in-depth look at the massive universe of EVE.
"It's going to take everything we've got to capture the amazing visuals and rich history of the EVE Universe in a single volume," said Dark Horse editor Dave Marshall.
"As we fill it with material from EVE Online’s stellar space combat to the ‘boots on the ground’ action of DUST 514’s planetary conflicts, EVE: SOURCE is shaping up to be one of the most stunning books we've ever published.”
The comic will appear in fall of this year, with the graphic novel and sourcebook hitting shelves this winter.
