Publisher exec says firm will continue to develop titles that do not require an internet connection
EA COO Peter Moore has move to clarify the publisher's stance on offline games following his recent comments that the firm "doesn't deliver offline experiences anymore".
In a blog post, Moore said that many of its games still included single-player and offline modes.
He explained that the ability to play offline was still something players wanted, and EA would continue to deliver this option in many of its games.
“Today, most games are “online” in some way, shape or form,” said Moore.
“Many games connect in online multiplayer modes; others include online services which allow for periodic content updates, sharing stats or achievements or connecting with friends; and others are games downloaded through digital delivery methods like Origin or the App Store. The reality is, the internet and social connectivity touches every one of our titles today – and has for several years.
“What that does not mean is that every game we ship will require an online connection. Many, if not most, of our games include single-player, offline modes that you can play entirely without an Internet connection, if you so choose. We know that’s something many of our players want, and we will continue to deliver it.”
Moore also moved to clarify statements about the company’s free-to-play ambitions, after he said the publisher was looking to introduce some form of free-to-play into all of its major franchises.
Although the firm has used the business model for franchises such as Battlefield, Need for Speed, FIFA, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Plants Vs. Zombies, Madden and an upcoming free version of Dragon Age, Moore said not all of its games would offer an F2P mode.
“We will continue to explore new free-to-play experiences for our franchises when we believe there is gamer interest and a cool new game we can build," he said.
"But of course we will continue to deliver award-winning core gaming experiences on all of these franchises."
