E3 2014: Nintendo developing online multiplayer shooter Splatoon

Nintendo is working on an online multiplayer shooter for the Wii U.

But it doesn’t feature real bullets, of course. The eight-player game, called Splatoon, tasks players with firing ink at their enemies and across the map to expand their territory.

Players take the form of a squid, but can alternate between that and a human as well. As a squid, players can traverse the map faster, but they can only shoot as a person.

The title tries to take advantage of the Wii U gamepad by displaying a map to show how much territory each team has amassed by shooting ink across the level. It can also be used to change the camera angle to view different parts of the map.

Splatoon is currently slated for release in 2015.
