Studio that sparked crowdfunding craze hits platform again for new strategy title

Double Fine returns to Kickstarter

Double Fine has launched another Kickstarter campaign seeking $750,000 for an epic strategy title called Massive Chalice.

The studio founded by Tim Schafer made history last year with its Double Fine Kickstarter Adventure campaign which raised $3.3 million for an old-school adventure game, breaking game crowdfunding records and starting a wave of industry Kickstarter projects.

That project, now known as Broken Age, is still a work in progress but Double Fine is a studio of many independent teams and the newly minted Massive Chalice crew needs its own round of funding from fans.

The video for the campaign is light hearted and shows much of the bizarre sense of humor the studio is known for, but also addresses many of the problems Kickstarter games face a year after the crowd funding boom.

Since Tim Schafer launched his campaign many other industry vets have taken to Kickstarter in the hopes of getting funding for retro-style games and to reinvigorate franchises long fallen by the wayside.

As can perhaps be expected, some complain this betrays the principles of crowdfunding, which they see as a platform for new ideas too risky for traditional investors.

Double Fine’s solution to these concerns is to get a fresh face with a new idea into the limelight.

The game is the brainchild of Brad Muir, best known as the creator of Iron Brigade, and combines the roguelike strategy of Dwarf Fortress with the turn-based tactics of X-Com and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Users play as an immortal king who must guide his kingdom through several generations of warfare, creating powerful bloodlines of heroic warriors.

The campaign has raised $195,000 at time of writing.
