Fourth iteration of Epic's tech beats Unity, CryEngine and more

Unreal Engine 4 has been declared the best engine in Develop 100: The Tech List, as voted for by industry experts.

A variety of engines were nominated for the latest edition of the Develop 100, which ranks the best game-making technology available, but Epic Games' outstripped the lot by securing the No.2 spot in the list.

Credit card-sized computer Raspberry Pi was voted No.1 in the list, which is now available for free via browser and the Develop magazine app on iOS.

Other engines in the list include Unity 5 (No.3), CryEngine (No.11), Havok Engine (No.17), PhyreEngine (No.44), Fabric Engine (No.46), Shiva Engine (No.47), Turbulenz Engine (No.57), HeroEngine (No.69), Goo Engine (No.75), Leadwerks Engine (No.78) and SGX engine (No.98).

Develop 100: The Tech List was voted for by more than 45 chief technology officers, indie developers and other industry experts.

Unreal Engine 4 launched at this year's GDC in San Francisco with a new subscription model that gives devs access to everything Epic Games uses to create its titles - including the source code - for just $19 per month.
