Many of us have to work on the move these days but one of the most recent industries to become mobile is that of music producer. Compared to the requirements for the average office job, the storage, memory, battery life and processor grunt you need for music production has only recently become possible in the most portable of devices: tablets and smartphones.

US-based composer, remixer and sound designer Justin Lassen is one of the music industry’s digital pioneers. While he believes that mobile devices have enabled musical creatives to work remotely for the past 10 years, it’s today’s next-generation tablets with the Intel Core family processors that can now run complete digital audio workstation (DAW) software on the go.

For developers, this is an exciting prospect. With a music industry on the move, the opportunity to build powerful mobile apps that help producers and composers create and edit projects from a tablet or smartphone is significant. The good news is that the tools are all there to help – whether you want to use HTML5 to build cross platform apps or make use of the Android NDK to create more complex mobile software.

And the future for mobile music production looks even more exciting for the creative coder, with the advent of cutting edge technologies such as RealSense – giving developers access to gesture, hand and finger tracking, speech recognition, facial analysis and augmented reality features. Currently only available for Ultrabooks, 2 in 1s and larger devices, it looks set to make a big impact on the world of creating music in the years to come.
