Intel Developer Blog: Softtalkblog invites you to submit app ideas to win prizes

According to data released this week by Canalys, by 2017 there will be 905 million tablets worldwide. This is up from the 15 million in 2010. The majority will be owned by consumers but they are set to gain a lot of traction in the enterprise space too. With this in mind, the competition I’m going to talk about should be of interest to many developers out there.

The Intel App Innovation Contest 2013 is now open and developers have until September 4th to submit ideas. The goal of the contest is for developers to create Windows 8 apps for either tablets or all-in-one devices. Intel wants to inspire developers to come up with innovative, entertaining and genuinely useful apps for these devices, for use by consumers or businesses.

There are some great prizes on offer, including a grand prize of $20,000. The contest is split in two, with prizes of $10,000 each for winners of the overall tablet and all-in-one categories. There are four tablet categories: education, finance, healthcare and retail and the winner of each will also win $10,000. There are two further all-in-one categories (entertainment and games) and again, each winner will take home $10,000.

Entrants who get through to the second phase (300 in the tablet section and 200 who enter all-in-one device apps) will also receive either a Lenovo Tablet Development System or a Lenovo All in One Development System.

In phase one, developers are invited to submit ideas for apps, before the deadline of September 4th. After this, 500 finalists will win the prizes mentioned above and entered into the next phase of the competition. Then, in phase two, developers submit the fully built apps. From these, 30 champion round apps will be announced and developers will need to submit video demos of the apps. From these, the winners will be selected and announced on December 18th.

The contest is open to people over the age of 18 from 20 countries including the UK, Germany and Spain. To submit your idea, register by visiting one of the community sites listed below. The apps must be submitted in the language natively used by one of these sites:

CodeProject (UK)
CSDN (China)
Habrahabr (Russia)
Thinkdigit (India)

Then complete the registration form and include a proposal for your demo app. Developers can submit more than one app, though each app can only be submitted to one category. Don’t forget to submit apps by September 4th. Good luck!
