Bleszinski: Sony forced Xbox One changes, not the internet

Changes mean consumers can expect more 'tacked on' multiplayer modes and DLC, says Gears of War creator

Sony was responsible for forcing Microsoft to ditch its controversial used games and always-on policies for the Xbox One, not an internet backlash, says Cliff Bleszinski.

Last night, following negative feedback on the console, Microsoft said users would no longer need to check in online once a day on the Xbox One and it would also not block used games

The former Epic Games developer then took to Twitter to state that Sony had played into some of the negativity around the Xbox One, which eventually saw Microsoft change tact.

"At the end of the day many hardcore dislike what was attempted. You can't do well in that space with many of your core unhappy,” said Bleszinski.

“Especially when users have a choice. The nature of capitalism encourages competition and Sony played into that.”

He added: “*Sony* forced Microsoft's hand, not the internet whining.”

Bleszinski also said consumers could now expect to see more “tacked on” multiplayer modes and DLC for their games, as well as the number of microtransactions in console titles skyrocketing.

He also said that he wanted to see money from games to go back to developers, rather than to retailers through used games sales.

“Brace yourselves. More tacked on multiplayer and DLC are coming," he said.

"You're also about to see available microtransactions skyrocket. HATS FOR EVERYONE. I want *developers* who worked their asses off to see money on every copy of their game that is sold instead of Gamestop. Fuck me, right?”

The Gears of War creator’s latest comments come after he stated that Sony had been playing on internet outrage surround the Xbox One console for free PR. He also claimed that the current triple-A development sector would not be able to survive alongside a pre-owned market.

“I'd bet Sony has some similar stuff up their sleeves they're just playing on the internet outrage for free PR,” he said.

“You cannot have game and marketing budgets this high while also having used and rental games existing. The numbers do NOT work people.”
