Gears of War creator adds that magazine cover exclusives and E3 reveals have lost the power they once had

Cliff Bleszinski is not planning to return to the Gears of War-style console development he walked away from in 2012.

In an interview with Gamasutra, the former Epic Games designer and Gears of War creator said the ‘old world’ of magazine cover exclusives and trade show unveiling has gone, adding that he intends to focus on digital-only game development.

“The whole ‘old guard’, where you get a Game Informer cover and an E3 reveal, is dead,” he said. “I'll never make another disc-based game for the rest of my career, and [at E3] they're trying to woo buyers from Target and Walmart?”

Bleszinski added that he will probably end up returning to his PC roots, because that’s where a lot of today’s gaming audience can be found.

“If I start a studio, I want a community manager there day one. I want weekly video or podcasts; I want task lists available on the subreddit,” Bleszinski said. “When my wife and I play Rust, before we play, we check the subreddit. Whenever you get a little bored with a game, someone issues an update. I feel like a game developer again, where I get to check out the build list.”

He added thathe is eagerly awaiting the next title from Gone Home maker, The Fullbright Company, but sees himself sticking with shooters. “It's in my DNA,” he said.
