Aussie games win half the Intel Level Up Contest spots

The 2014 Intel Level Up Contest has drawn to a close, and five out of ten of the winners are based in Australia

In spite of being a small fraction of entrants, Aussie developers managed to take half the winning spots including the grand prize for this year's Intel Level Up Competition.

The contest holds up developers for their work by paying for them to be showcased at PAX Prime on the Intel booth, and the grand prize was taken by Melbourne-based developer Kumobius for their iOS hit (which also won the PAX Australia Indie Showcase in 2013) Duet.

Duet is a simple game which asks you to rotate two balls as obstacles scroll by, set to beautiful music. It also took the prize for Best Action Game and Best Sound.

Over the Top Tower Defence (or OTTTD) from SMG Studio and published by Aussie indie label Surprise Attack took the prize for Best Open/Other Game. The highly innovative puzzler FRAMED from Loveshack Entertainment took the prize for (understandably) Best Puzzle Game, and finally the Best Use of Game Physics was taken by a small Wollongong outfit called Cross Product for their gravity-defying platformer Airscape: Fall of Gravity.

It was an all-star judging panel this year as well, the lineup being Rami Ismail, Chris Avellone, Chris Taylor, Tim Schafer, Wolfgang Engel, Nathan Vella, and Marc Saltzman.
