Two audio firms advance tech for Sonyâ??s new handheld

The middleware industry is today pledging its support for Sony’s upcoming handheld, the PSP2.

Now two audio firms, Firelight Technologies and Audiokinetic, have updated their technologies to support the high-powered handheld.

Firelight has worked with Sony engineers to optimise its FMOD Ex API and the FMOD Designer tool for PSP2, the firm said.

Meanwhile, Audiokinetic has also chosen PSP2 as the first portable device to be supported by its Audiokinetic technology.

Both announcements come on the day that Blitz Games Studios, NaturalMotion and Trinigy pledge support for the PSP successor.

A new PSP2 FMOD update is said includes all the usual features.

“FMOD’s DSP engine will be off-loaded to the PSP2 media engine. The performance that this will provide, will give the flexibility that FMOD users are used to, with little or no extra CPU cost,” said Firelight CEO Brett Paterson.

Meanwhile, Audiokinetic said its PSP2-itegrated tech “offers a streamlined workflow and supports every phase of audio development, from the creation of audio structures to mixing and monitoring of audio performances”.

A preview build of Wwise is currently available and already integrated by customers in upcoming projects.

“Right from the start we were very impressed with the capabilities of the new system,” said Simon Ashby, VP of product strategy at Audiokinetic.

“We felt that offering Wwise would help developers create the best interactive experience possible while facilitating the development process on this new platform.”
