The texture authoring software company allow entrants to give their take on the 'MAT' mascot

Allegorithmic announce winners of Substance Source MAT competition

Substance Source developer, Allegorithmic, has announced the winners of its ‘Meet MAT’ competition, which asked entrants with creating their own textures for the Allegorithmic mascot, MAT.

The challenge to create the best take on MAT was met by over 1,200 entrants from 16 countries, a third of those being students. The MAT model itself was downloaded from Substance over 4,500 times and Allegorithmic ended up revising the rules of the competition to allow more winners.

The entrants could use materials available on the Substance Source library to create their own MAT, with only their imaginations as a brief. Some of those entries are shown below and the full list can be seen on the Allegorithmic website.

The 30 winners received prizes provided by co-sponsors, Nvidia, Artoyz, Wacom and Sketchfab, along with prizes from Allegorithmic. "“I was amazed by the consistent quality and diversity of the entries," said competition judge, Blair Armitage, a 3D character artist. "The student category was particularly impressive, with some MATs definitely reaching a professional level."

"This was an opportunity to challenge Substance users new and old to display their creativity and passion in a fun way,” said CEO and founder of Allegorithmic, Sébastien Deguy. “We were expecting some impressive entries, but we were still blown away by the incredible response we received.”
