Tapjoy on the offensive against Apple

$5m fund to port iOS games to Android

Tapjoy, the mobile monetisation group now out of favour with Apple, has launched a $5 million fund to help devs port their games to Android.

The mobile games services group will use the $5 million to help fund developers port existing iOS apps to Google’s rival mobile platform.

“Tapjoy will provide full porting and testing services to ensure the apps work on all of the leading Android handsets,” the company said.

Developers looking to take advantage of the scheme must apply through Tapjoy’s website.

In return for its funding, Tapjoy wants the ported games to use its mobile gaming network.

Tapjoy’s business has recently struggled on Apple devices after the iPhone manufacturer placed a ban on certain cross-game promotions. More details on the dispute can be found here.

The company is now publishing reasons why developers should port their games to Android.

“How about the fact that Android recently overtook iOS and RIM for number 1 in market share among global mobile operating systems?” the company said.

“Or the fact that nearly 400,000 new Android-enabled devices are activated every day?” it added.

“Simply put, Android is where it’s at.”

Mihir Shah, the company’s CEO, said Tapjoy “is in the business of democratising the application ecosystem”.

He added: "The openness and skyrocketing popularity of the Android platform makes it a perfect match for our long-term objectives. This new porting program will identify great apps and give them the opportunities they deserve."
