Leaked files suggest players could use real money to purchase in-game currency

Grand Theft Auto Online could feature microtransactions

The multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto V could include microtransactions, according to alleged leaked files from the game.

The files, spotted by a Reddit user, suggest that players could be able to purchase in-game cash with real money in GTA Online.

An XML file appears to show four ‘cash cards’ worth between $100,000 and $1.25m.

A statement in the leaked file also appears to suggest such microtransactions will be implemented by stating: “Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting.”

The use of microtransactions would be a first for the GTA series, which has often relied on one-off premium pricing and DLC following a game launch.

Some Reddit users have responded negatively to the potential news, which has yet to be confirmed by Rockstar, with suggestions that it is already difficult to make money in the game through normal means.

The use of in-game purchases have become a hugely popular business model in games, spurred on by the success of free-to-play on mobile.

Last year EA implemented microtransactions into its Dead Space 3 single player, giving users the option to purchase items with real money. The publisher has also had big success with the model through FIFA Ultimate Team.

Other examples of microtransactions in triple-A titles include Mass Effect 3 and the Crytek’s upcoming Xbox One title, Ryse: Son of Rome.

Grand Theft Auto Online goes live on Xbox Live and PSN from October 1st.
