Indies take centre stage for PS4 at Gamescom

Indie developers from around the world are taking centre stage at Sony’s PS4 conference at this year’s Gamescom.

Taking to the stage, PS4 lead system architect Mark Cerny said indies brought Sony’s platforms a vital dimension in creating the best place to play.

He said it was important for Sony to provde a wide variety of content on its consoles, and the passion of small teams was "critical to transforming that goal into reality".

He added that the PS4 aimed at strengthing the company’s indie support further, to "fully support self publishing", and allow developers to maintain creative control.

"As a consequence we believe that a renassiance of gaming content is coming on PS4," he said.

Sony’s Shahid Ahmad also took to the stage to reveal an array of PS4 and Vita exclusives coming from indie developers.

UK developer and Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell’s new title Volume will be released next year, making its debut exclusively on PS4 and Vita.

Vlambeer’s new title Wasteland Kings will also be coming to PS4 and Vita next year, as will Hotline Miami 2.

Other titles include N++, coming to PS4 this winter exclusitvely, new content for Edmund McMillen’s Rebirth, debuting on Vita and PS4 next Spring, and Guns of Icarus, which will debut on the PS4.

"We’ve been listening to indies, wev’ve asked them what it means to be an indie. Indie means freedom," said Ahmad.

"Imagine the freetom to make what you want, release when you want, on the device you want."
