London event aims to celebrate and recognise work of 'unsung heroes' in game development

Top audio talent heads for Game Music Connect

An array of audio talent from the game industry is set to descend on London in September for Game Music Connect.

The event will see a number of top composers tell their personal journeys into scoring games, including speakers such as Destiny’s Martin O’Donnell, Assassin’s Creed, Hitman and Borderland series composer Jesper Kyd, Killzone’s Joris de Man, Tomb Raider’s Jason Graves, Dead Space 3’s James Hannigan and Mass Effect’s Richard Jacques.

Other topics to be discussed at the event include the technical, business and creative aspects of music within the game development process, next-gen audio and interactive music techniques.

SCEE music production manager Alastair Lindsay and Microsoft Studios audio director Paul Lipson will also be at the event to discuss how they work with composers, and the commissioning process involved.

Those who book before August 25th can save up to £26 through special early bird rates.

“We’re delighted to be welcoming some prodigious music talent to Game Music Connect in London,” said veteran game audio director and Game Music Connect co-founder John Broomhall.

“Making a videogame is a huge team effort and many talents are brought to bear. But I think it’s fair to say the composer of a game score creates a particularly significant influence on the player experience. You could certainly argue that game composers are sometimes the unsung heroes. We want to celebrate and recognise their work. The right music approach can even help define a franchise’s IP – some of the big industry players are taking that very seriously.”

Composer and Game Music Connect co-founder James Hannigan added: “An absolutely key person in the game music process and pipeline is the audio director. He/she is likely to play a key role in choosing, hiring and briefing the composer plus dealing with them day-to-day.

"This hugely important role is one we will explore at Game Music Connect and we will have some leading audio directors on hand, who between them have vast industry experience and are eminently qualified to discuss game music from the client side. For anybody aspiring to write game music, this should be particularly interesting.”

Game Music Connect will take place in London on September 9th.
