Frostbite 3-powered blockbuster to release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in Autumn

GDC 13: Video: EA reveals Battlefield 4

EA DICE has officially revealed Battlefield 4 at the Game Developers Conference 2013.

Powered by the Frostbite 3 game engine, EA touted a more open world single player than previous entries to the Battlefield series, and stated that users would “experience huge environments”, although the 17-minute trailer, which you can view below appears to show the title’s more linear elements.

Singe player progress will also be tracked as DICE looks to add further social aspects to the title, although it is not clear just how ‘social’ this will be.

The teaser demo shows the main character walking through a wartorn street in the city of Baku, showing off the Frostbite 3 engine’s impressive visuals, lighting and water effects, as well as destructible scenery.

The game appears to continue with the series’ new trend of looking to offer cinematic gameplay similar to that of its fierce FPS rival Call of Duty.

Battlefield 4 is currently slated for release on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC this Autumn, and has not yet been confirmed for PS4 or Xbox 720 release.

A Wii U version is not said to be underway.

"We are so humbled and proud to debut Battlefield 4 on a global stage with simultaneous events in San Francisco and Stockholm," said EA games label exec VP Patrick Soderlund.

"To be this early in development, and to already be so polished is a huge achievement for the DICE team and reflection of their passion and commitment to driving the franchise forward. Today’s demo was just the beginning — we have so much more in store.

"It is thrilling to witness peoples’ reaction when seeing the game for the first time. It really makes you realize that we are at the beginning of a whole new era for gaming. As artists and craftspeople, we are focused on creating a dynamic, open design that brings people together with amazing, surprising unscripted moments that they’ll talk about for days. That’s the beauty of Battlefield."
