Report: PS4 to stream games with Gaikai

Backwards compatibility will come through streaming tech

Reports claim that Sony plans to provide access to PlayStation 3 games using the Gaikai streaming service.

This lines up with earlier speculation that the $380 million acquisition of the streaming company by Sony was intended to provide backwards compatibility.

Sources "familiar" wiht the matter told the Wall Street Journal that "the new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet."

"The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs."

There have been rumors aplenty in the run-up to Wednesday's expected console reveal, including leaked photos of what is purportedly an early prototype of the PS4 controller.

The WSJ said the new console boasts "other enhancements," but did not go into any detail about what those might be.

So I will have to buy all the PS3 games I already own again-just to stream them. That's clever that.
Alienating customers is what Sony does best.
Goodbye PS3.

Use disc as register device

They could just register the disc in the system and stream that title. No different from how you can install a game on the PS3/360, but still need the disc to boot it.

I'm afraid not Dean, the PSP offered a service to play PS1 games on it and you have to pay for the privilege still for every title you wanted.

And then again, you could only play "some" games, there's a huge minefield of licensing and dead publishers, so you'll only be ably to play 50% of the games you own at best!

Since when has Sony ever done anything to benefit the player? It's play by our rules of don't play at all.
