End of the line for US developer as Disney turns focus to 'fast evolving gaming platforms' and 'key priorities'

Disney closes Epic Mickey studio Junction Point

Disney has closed down Epic Mickey developer Junction Point.

The company said it had taken the decision to shut the studio, led by Warren Spector, as part of its on-going effort to move into “fast-evolving gaming platforms” and align its resources against its key priorities.

Employees are believed to have been on enforced holiday since the release of Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two in November, and have now been informed that they will be losing their jobs.

The closure follows a poor critical and commercial reception for Epic Mickey 2, scoring an average review score of 59 on Metacritic.

“It was with much sadness that we informed our teams today of changes to our Games organisation, which include the closure of Junction Point Studios,” read a statement from Disney, as reported by Gamasutra.

“These changes are part of our on-going effort to address the fast-evolving gaming platforms and marketplace and to align resources against our key priorities. We’re extremely grateful to Warren Spector and the Junction Point team for their creative contributions to Disney with Disney Epic Mickey and Disney Epic Mickey 2.”

Disney recently unveiled its plans to launch a new IP called Disney Infinity, which will unite a range of the company’s iconic characters as a console, mobile and online game.

Similar to Activision’s Skylanders, the title will also incorporate a number of action figurines to open up further features in the main game.
