PokÚmon app is console giant's first paid-for title on iOS
Nintendo subsidiary The PokÚmon Company has released a PokÚdex app on the iOS App Store in Japan.
The title marks Nintendo’s first foray into paid-for apps on the App Store, and comes after The Pokemon Company released free Creatures Inc-developed mobile game Pokemon Say Tap? in July last year, which is also available on Android.
The latest app, also created by Creatures Inc, currently costs ą170, and also features in-app purchases enabling users to expand and complete their PokÚdex. It is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
The title allows users to search hundreds of PokÚmon from the popular series, with information and images available on each entry. The PokÚdex’s App Store page also appears to suggest there are small videos that can be played, as well as sounds for each pokÚmon.
Whilst not a traditional game, the release could mark a big shift in Nintendo’s development strategy, having previously been reticent to make titles for platforms other than its own. It should be noted however that any success will likely not result in the release of games based on Nintendo's other major franchises in the near future.
