Origin compulsory for online EA Wii U games

Publishing giant to gain access to e-mail address, Nintendo Network ID and date of birth

Digital distribution platform Origin will be mandatory for Wii U users hoping to play EA-published games online, according to an updated privacy policy document.

As unearthed by GameSpot, Nintendo account information will be provided to the publishing giant for users to establish an Origin account.

Information to be transferred to EA includes e-mail addresses, Nintendo Network ID, friend list, country, language, date of birth and Mii information.

The new policy states however that personal details obtained does not include credit card or other financial account information.

Similar polices are also in place for PS3 and Xbox Live users.

The scheme is likely to be used to gather analytics data on online user behaviour in EA-published games.

EA’s Origin digital distribution platform, which is also available on PC, Mac, iOS and Android, currently has more than 21 million registered users.

Sorry EA, unless I know why my family won't be buying your games. No offense, but I don't understand the rationale of providing you my email address and age. That is enough to specifically identify people.

It's so they can "shut off their servers" if they think you've played their older games too long, while other games from other publishers will continue to work until the next Nintendo console comes out.
