Joe Madureira leaves after seven years to work on 'the next big thing'

Vigil Games co-founder quits

Vigil Games co-founder and creative director Joe Madureira has quit the Darksiders developer after seven years at the studio.

Revealing the news on Facebook, Madureira said the time had come for him to move on to new adventures and is currently working on what he termed as ‘the next big thing’.

He added that he was proud of everything he had achieved at the studio, and assured fans that Vigil was in good hands for the future.

Vigil has yet to reveal who will replace the co-founder as creative director.

“Farewell and best wishes to all my brothers and sisters at Vigil Games,” said Madureira.

“After seven long years and two hit games (Darksiders BABY!) I’m afraid the time has come for me to move on to new adventures. I could not be more proud of what we achieved, or the awesome people who helped build up this studio. I can safely say Vigil’s future is in very good hands, so expect only awesomeness down the road. This feels surreal…I miss the place already.

He added: “I’ll be talking more about ‘The Next Big Thing’ in the coming months, but in the short term, I’m focusing on banging out a bunch of comics. Which should hopefully sate your hunger, you bloodthirsty savages!!! (*believe it or not that’s a term of endearment.)”

Joe Madureira founded Vigil Games in Texas in 2005, and oversaw the development of a number of two Darksiders games, the first released in 2010.

As well as working in games development, he has also made a career as an artist at Marvel Comics, lending his artwork to comics such as Deadpool, Uncanny X-Men, Ultimates and Avenging Spider-Man.

Earlier this year, beleaguered publisher THQ laid off 79 staff from the Texas studio, and announced that its in-development title Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium would no longer be an MMO due to the cuts in staff and budget.
