Apple takes a bite out of promotional apps

Apple takes a bite out of promotional apps

New clause in app guidelines targets third-party promotion services and affiliate programs

Changes have been made to Apples App Review Guidelines that puts pressure on third-party app promotion services.

Apple has drawn a good deal of fire lately for its decision to remove google maps support from iOS6, and developers are worried that changes to the app store layout mean it will be even harder to gain an audience.

Now PocketGamer reports that the Revised Guidelines could further threaten the status quo by removing the promotional services some see as the best chance an app has of gaining an audience.

"Apps that display Apps other than for purchase or promotion in a manner similar to or confusing with the App Store will be rejected," reads guideline 2.25

This seems to point directly at a few services -  FreeAppADay, AppoDay, AppGratis, Daily App Dream and AppShopper have all been named as potential targets - but could have wider ranging consequences for cross promotion within apps.

This is not to say Apple will definitely take action against any service, but this is the rumor making its way down worried corridors in the mobile development community.

Maybe I've read this wrong but unless you jailbreak your phone, all games are downloaded from the app store, so if you're promoting another app Apple will get a cut of it anyway. How can they be against something that promotes apps for sale on the app store?

Issue of presentation?

It's extremely poorly worded, but as I read it, the issue is about presentation. They're basically saying: "Don't try and pretend that your app is the App Store".
