Wipeout franchise returns

Wipeout franchise returns

Social networking feeds tease new entry in game series

An unknown developer has been handed the reigns to the Wipeout franchise, according to official social networking feeds.

The Wipeout 2048 accounts on Twitter and Facebook sent the message “We. Are. Alive.” to fans, suggesting there is still life in the series.

The future of the franchise was put it doubt after Sony closed the game’s developer Studio Liverpool last month, having struggled to make much profit with the critically acclaimed series.

Sony has declined to comment on the story.

A picture sent along with the message can be viewed below.

You kill the studio responsible for one of the best racing franchises, then hand their baby over to some unknown? That's pretty crass.

If this is true - that a WipeOut is in the works, who is left standing to handle a title of this magnitude?

I mean, the studio behind BLUR (best racing game of the past 5 years? Probably.) has closed.

The studio behind Split/Second (2nd best racing game of the past 5 years) has closed.

And Sony killed Psygnosis.

So who is left out there to take this on? Codemasters, maybe?

Anyone leaking anymore intel?

@Mystakil

I agree completely. No doubt done because Liverpool was too expensive and these new guys are cheaper. Executives need to keep tabs on this stuff, how else can they get bonuses to pay for their flash cars?

I'm guessing it may either be Bugbear or a totally new developer. As the only other likely candidate would have been Criterion, and they're owned by EA now.

But yeah, it's pretty sick of Sony to flaunt this after closing down one of the best developers in the world. But then again they did make them produce the same game over and over instead of letting them be innovative like the old days.

Sort of similar to Microsoft with RARE.
